Sydney: Industrial Relations Essentials for Community Sector Employers

Workshop | Vibe Hotel Sydney
Tuesday, April 21, 2015 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
, New South Wales

Part 1: Getting the basics right in the Fair Work system

Part 2: Opportunities, Threats and Uncertainty: Industrial aspects of managing change

Why should I attend?

The Fair Work Act continues to be a challenge for employers to keep up with. At the same time the rate of change across the sector seems to be increasing.This workshop is in two parts.

  • Part 1 is designed to give community sector employers a good overview of current hot industrial issues affecting the sector, and ideas to take back to their organisation for fine tuning current employment practices.
  • Part 2 takes a closer look at restructuring. The sector is facing widespread change through re-tendering, “reform” and cutting of government programs and this workshop aims to help participants develop change strategies that will result in successful restructuring with a committed and engaged workforce.

Part 1 includes:

  • The contract of employment – building in room to move;
  • Casual and part-time work;
  • Award interpretation;
  • Enterprise agreements;
  • Managing termination of employment – lessons from recent cases;
  • Update on the modern award review.

Part 2 includes:

  • Contractual and statutory constraints;
  • Changing job roles – from modifying position descriptions to potential redundancy;
  • “Genuine redundancy “ defence against unfair dismissal claims;
  • Practical approaches to consultation and communication during periods of uncertainty;
  • Interactive case studies and working through real world scenarios.

Who should attend

Managers with responsibility for employment practices and for managing employees. This workshop is a good introduction to community sector industrial relations for managers new to the sector, and a refresher and update for more experienced managers.
